Exhaling. A poem by Anne Tully

Failing to tamp the flame of fear
That licks hungrily around my consciousness

Sleep once elusive returns but a carriage of bad dreams clatter
Across the stones of slumber

Throat tightens and fears roar in and out the windows in my mind
Throwing open the door I inhale the air
Lightened with bird song

One step
One minute
One breath
Inhalation
Incantation
Exaltation
