Corona Poem and Lockdown. Two poems by Rose Smith

Corona Poem

Our TV stands suspended in the corner of the room,
But the only news that’s on it is full of doom and gloom.
There are people coming on the screen we never saw before,
But now we know their First Names, and each day there is more and more.

There is Luke, Henry, Tony and our neighbour Sam.
They list the number of the dead and where they came from.
But behind each one that’s given is a great big flood of tears,
And an awful lot of reason to have some dreadful fears.
Their families never said goodbye, with their arms around each one,
To tell them that they loved them and they would carry on.

So the Government has told us, we can’t have Wakes or Crowds,
And we stand beside our dear ones that are wrapped up in a shroud.
But we hope that this will leave us, and peace will come at last,
And the old Corona Virus will be in the distant past.

Lockdown

My life was just a hurry
no time to stop and think
The only rest I seem to get
was at the kitchen sink

Then came the serious lockdown
we were not allowed outside
In fact our friends and family
could not stand just by our side

So what I thought was hardship
rushing here and rushing there
This was all forbidden
and I didn’t really care

I started all my cleaning
dusted high and dusted low
Cleared out all my presses
but had no one for to show

Did the same for my garage
and every single shed
They all looked like bedrooms
all was missing was the beds

My daughter did my shopping
packed the fridge from top to toe
She knew each single corner
and where the things should go

At the break of dawn
I listened to the birds so very clear
You think they knew that it was time
To give me loads of cheer

The pigeons started cooing
I know they cannot sing
In fact you would be thinking
They had a night in Tullyvin

Then there’s the little robin
That sits up on the stone
He connects me to my loved ones
High above the heavenly throne

On Saturday’s my grandkids
just come and fill the room
So Cavan Cork and Dublin
are connected via Zoom

The purpose of this lockdown
was to keep us safe and well
thank god that we are spared
This story for us to tell

So very soon we will meet up
To hug and kiss and smile
And it will all be worth it
To go that extra mile
