Breaking Open the Uncertainty. A Poem by Susan Richardson

This silence is nothing new.
It made its home here long ago,
nestled against the apartment walls,
whispering sweet nothings
delicately
into my ear.
But today, with fear scathing the streets,
extinguishing the background rumble of the city,
a familiar sound
pushed through the quiet.
A lifetime of memories
flew in from across an ocean,
her face suddenly on my screen,
offering the sky into my entombed morning,
her eyes opening up this sheltering life.
For more than thirty years,
I have known the comfort of her voice,
breaking open the uncertainty,
reminding me that
even when I feel afraid,
it is ok to laugh.
