Time like this. A poem by Cathy Carson

We have never known
a time like this.
We are afraid to go out
to hold hands and kiss.
Afraid to embrace
the family we miss.
We have never known
a time like this

We have never known
such fear, such doubt.
We are afraid of the media
afraid to go out.
A leader who seems
to not have an ounce.
We have never known
such fear, such doubt.

We have never had shelves
that are empty and bare.
The pasta, the toilet roll
it should have been there.
But people are greedy
good people seem scarce.
We have never had shelves
that are empty and bare.

I hope this will teach us
to reflect, to be kind.
To think outside of ourselves
to open our minds.
To love each other harder
to make more of our time.
I hope this will teach us
to reflect, to be kind.

Look, heroes are emerging,
all around they rise.
They make us see clearly,
they open our eyes
to how we can help others
in these strange times.
Look, heroes are emerging
all around us they rise.

When all this is over,
when we come out of our caves.
Will we be more and spend less
perhaps even have saved?
Will you know how to love more,
how to connect and behave?
When this is all over,
when we come out of our caves.

We will say, we have been waiting
for times like this.
We can go out
we can hold hands and kiss.
We can embrace
the ones we have missed
We will say, we have been waiting
for times like this.
