The Same Boat. A poem by Lauren Browne

“We are all in this together.”
“We are all in the same boat.”
“Everybody is struggling.”
But

My boat was full of water
A long time before you couldn’t
See the beach.
My lifebuoys were on their last legs
Because there has never been
Enough air in my lungs.
My quarantine has lasted years
Inside this broken boat.

I’ve been isolated from my self
For as long as I can remember.
But don’t worry.
Your quarantine will end
Because we are all in this together.
But don’t forget mine.
Mine is
everlasting.
