Pendemic Reflections by Jessica Pape

after Jay Bernard

At least we are alone

And I can tell you how it felt

To sit by the river

In the evening heat of a summer day

Not in Galway

My whole life in my hands

All bridges burnt

In a beautiful display of fireworks

Orange skies, sound of fire

In my head

Letting go of all safety lines

No need for them as

All bridges can burst

Into flames

Any moment, any day

Observing Couples

Bickering over where to sit

In the coffeehouse

Makes me wonder

Who came up with the idea?

That a woman needs a man

A man needs a woman

To feel complete

Last week in town

I found a postcard quoting Aristotle

Who allegedly said –

Whoever prefers security to freedom

Stays rightly a slave
