Ode to our Elders. A poem by Linda Barry Tuohy

Amongst this madness of the scene
he stands quietly in his goodbye
The care worker closes the door
on our conversation of non enjoyment

No hugs No kisses at 89
he ruefully smiles
Comments he’s lost some weight
jokes & gives a hug to her
Where she in my place stands

Oh the cruelty of Lockdown
on our Elders we must give thought
Is it for their safety for no overruns
we imprison our Elders of time
We should ask them their fate

For Freedom is what they sought
Through all the generations gone before
We ask a lot for them to lay down
for transgenerational Freedom
of Thought
