Midnight Messenger. A poem by George Mac Donald

Last night I crossed the void of
time and space
And landed gentle kisses on
your face
I tried to let you know that I
was there
I gently touched your hand and
stroked your hair,
I held you in my arms just like
a child
Until I saw that in your sleep
you smiled
Then rocked you like an infant,
to and fro
And when, alas, ’twas time for
me to go,
I knew that you had sensed my
love was near
A childlike glow replaced the
frown of fear.

…………..

Written for my wife when she was very ill and I had to leave her alone in hospital at night.
