Colouring, a poem by Jessica Pape

She had tried to stay
Inside the lines
Her whole life
Doing her best to
Stick to the rules
Perfecting neat lines
Deciding to rather not start a picture
Before getting it wrong

It took a pandemic induced
Lockdown
A sudden removal of all the little freedoms
She allowed herself in normal times
To make a decision
To cycle in the middle of the road
Ignoring all traffic lights
Leaving the house without hand sanitizer
Or mobile phone
Getting into the mood
To take risks

All anxiety about her health
And a myriad of other worries
Blown away
By the feeling of floating
On a bike
A feeling as close to flying
You can get as a human

She decided to be a writer
Make this her main bread-less
profession
To live on passion alone
Making new friends
With benefits
As soon as this lockdown was lifted
Or even before
In her 2km radius

Starting today
Colouring
Outside the lines
