Captain Tom Moore Villanelle by Anita Gracey

He walks for the NHS with shuffling feet
baby steps to a new direction
he walks for those he’ll never meet.

Like a plough he steadies his aim
for overturned lives he actions
he walks for the NHS with shuffling feet.

A sponsor for a thousand was his game
but thirty million is his ascension
he walks for those he’ll never meet.

Along with cash, morale is enflamed
he has hero status without pretension
he walks for the NHS with shuffling feet.

The nation strains, he doesn’t complain
as the guard salute to attention
he walks for those he’ll never meet.

The world is in pain
being alone is a misapprehension
he walks for the NHS with shuffling feet
he walks for those he’ll never meet.
